On 24 September, the Head of the EUACI, Allan Pagh Kristensen participated as a speaker in a conference “Forging a Democratic Future in Wartime” in Copenhagen organized by the Danish Institute of International Studies (DIIS).
The event brought together Ukrainian and Danish representatives of government, civil society and academia to take stock of Ukraine’s reform process, with a focus on anti-corruption, energy, decentralisation and democracy.
In a panel about rule-of-law and anti-corruption, the head of the EUACI described the environment in which the anti-corruption institutions are working and underlined the importance of their independence that is key for their success.
“The independent anti-corruption institutions, processing still more cases and the high anti-corruption court delivering still more verdicts. Not because of more corruption, but because of these institutions’ enhanced capacity. While punishment of corrupt officials is important, there is a need to focus more on preventive work, including work in sectors and digitalization where Ukraine is already a frontrunner”, said Allan Pagh Kristensen.
While fighting Russia’s war, Ukraine is also implementing impressive reforms in preparation for EU membership. In the current geopolitical context, cooperation with European partners remains important both for sustaining this progress and for recovery planning. The EUACI will continue to support Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions and reforms on the country’s path towards EU membership.
