EUACI partner Mariupol has become the most transparent and accountable city in Ukraine

News

The partner city of the EU Anti-Corruption Initiative (EUACI) Mariupol took first place in two Transparency International Ukraine rankings: in the Transparency Rating 2020 among 100 Ukrainian cities and in the Accountability Rating 2020 among 50 cities.

Allan Pagh Kristensen, EUACI Head of Unit:

“Congrats to Mariupol! In 2017, Mariupol took 57th place in the newly established Transparency Rating by TI Ukraine. And in just 4 years the city has reached first place. It is worth noting that since 2018, the EU Anti-Corruption Initiative has been supporting Mariupol and 4 other Ukrainian cities in the strengthening of integrity. Such rapid dynamics show that we are confidently moving in the right direction.”

Vadym Boychenko, Mariupol Mayor:

“This is a great victory and a great opportunity for the Mariupol community. The city’s doors are opening for international investors! Mariupol will continue the course of transparent development.”

Within the Integrity Cities project framework, the EU Anti-Corruption Initiative provides assistance to 5 cities, including Mariupol, Zhytomyr, Nikopol, Chervonohrad, and Chernivtsi. They are also represented in rankings of TI Ukraine:

Transparency Rating 2020:

  • Chernivtsi – 24th place (28th place in 2019)
  • Nikopol – 25th place (34th place in 2019)
  • Zhytomyr – 26th place (12th place in 2019)
  • Chervonohrad – 52nd place (66th place in 2019)

For the first time, Accountability Rating 2020:

  • Chernivtsi – 5th place
  • Nikopol – 18th place
  • Zhytomyr – 27th place

* Chervonohrad was not evaluated

TI Ukraine experts noted that cities’ transparency and accountability do not depend on their size or region. The main factor in implementing the changes is the proactive position of local governments.
