The Role of the EUACI in the Restoration and Development of Local Communities

On 21 October, the XVIII Ukrainian Municipal Forum, titled “Unity for Victory and Ukraine’s Recovery,” organized by the Association of Ukrainian Cities, commenced its work. This annual Forum serves as a traditional platform where all levels of government come together to address the challenges facing communities and to develop policies for local self-government.

This year, the Forum welcomed over 350 participants, including representatives from local and national governments, international institutions, European municipalities, and the media.

Taras Sluchyk, Team Leader of EUACI’s Component Integrity Cities and Integrity Reconstruction, joined the Forum’s second day. He participated in a panel discussion dedicated to exploring opportunities provided by international technical assistance projects for the communities’ restoration and development.

During his speech, he shared experiences from joint projects with partner cities of the EUACI – Mykolaiv, Chernivtsi, and Zhytomyr. Specifically, Taras Sluchyk highlighted:

Mykolaiv’s International Aid Monitoring Webportal, which EUACI and the city council launched in March this year. The portal allows users to track what aid was received, who received it, and how it is being used.

GIS Module for Recording Damage and Destruction in Mykolaiv. This system is designed to record damages, organize recovery projects, and enable the creation of commission inspection reports.

Chernivtsi City Council’s “Cultural Heritage Protection” GIS Module. The system maintains registers of cultural heritage objects, historical zones, zoning objects, and information about facade signage within the city’s historical areas.

GIS Module for Green Zones and Tree Inventory in Zhytomyr. This tree’s digitalization enables the city administration to easily collect, process, and analyze data about them, as well as monitor their preservation. The system will be invaluable for implementing the City’s Environmental Strategy.
