First Steps Toward Change: NABU Anti-Corruption School for Ukrainian law students

Twenty-eight law students from across Ukraine spent a week immersed in justice, integrity, and the fight against corruption. The sixth NABU Anti-Corruption School was completed, and we at the EUACI firmly believe that for many of these young professionals, this marks only the beginning of their anti-corruption journey.

“Denmark is deeply committed to supporting Ukraine. While main efforts have been directed towards defense, we also support other important initiatives, including the fight against corruption through the EUACI. My sincere congratulations to each of you on being in the Anti-Corruption School. You have chosen a difficult yet important path. Your decision to engage in the fight against corruption is both commendable and courageous,” Lars Olaf Søndal Petersen, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine, highlighted in his welcome speech to participants.

“The rule of law and anti-corruption are not just requirements for EU integration — they are the only path to building a better society. It has to be part of the mindset. I would like to thank each of you for what you are doing, for choosing to stay in Ukraine, to study law, and to help shape the country’s future,”  Gediminas Navickas, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, said in his welcome speech.

Throughout the week, the participants:

  • analyzed high-profile NABU and SAPO cases together with detectives and prosecutors;
  • learned how international anti-corruption cooperation works;
  • practiced OSINT investigation techniques;
  • discussed the role of communications and business integrity;
  • took part in an anti-corruption guided tour of Kyiv;
  • visited the High Anti-Corruption Court and the newsroom of Bihus.Info investigative bureau.

Staying in Kyiv, students received a unique opportunity to learn about the independence of the anti-corruption institutions not just from history, but by being at the very heart of change.

Following the school, 10 students were selected for internships at the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine — a significant next step in the development of their practical skills of investigating corruption.

The project is implemented with the support of the EU Anti-Corruption Initiative (EUACI) and the Ukrainian-Danish Youth House in Kyiv.
