On 14 October 2014, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the laws “On Prevention of Corruption”, “On the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine”, and “On the Principles of State Anti-Corruption Policy in Ukraine (Anti-Corruption Strategy) for 2014–2017”, which laid the foundation for Ukraine’s independent anti-corruption system.
Since then, Ukraine has risen in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index from 144th to 105th place. State procurement and officials’ asset declarations have become public, and the share of citizens who personally encounter corruption has dropped more than threefold. Ukrainian society has also changed: people are now ready to defend the independence of anti-corruption institutions through peaceful protest, and investigative journalists have gained real influence both nationally and locally.
On the anniversary, we marked this progress together with young people during a special screening of the documentary “After the Era of Silence” by hromadske and the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), produced with the support of the EU Anti-Corruption Initiative (EUACI).
After the screening, participants discussed the film with its creators. The event was organized with the support of EUACI and the Ukrainian-Danish Youth House in Kyiv.
We invite you to watch “After the Era of Silence” on the hromadske YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/V6Foj5q3D0Q) and reflect on the journey from the Soviet legacy to the creation of independent anti-corruption institutions, and on the people who refused to remain silent and helped change the system.
