9 teams, 4  judges, and 1 goal – to develop innovative solutions for open data

That was the spirit of the Chernivtsi Open Data Hackathon, held last Friday in Chernivtsi. The event brought together developers, analysts, and open data enthusiasts to create services that enhance transparency and integrity and improve residents’ quality of life.

Open Data Hackathon is where ideas for new services can emerge – services that will work not only in Chernivtsi but across the country. EUACI and the city council have been partners for several years, and among our shared achievements is the digitalization of internal and external processes. This demonstrates that the city and its administration are ready for new IT ideas, solutions, and proposals – and are prepared to implement them to deliver quality services to residents,” said Taras Sluchyk, EUACI Team Lead of the Integrity Cities Component.

High-quality open data directly contributes to creating services and tools to save resources, close gaps for corruption and improve residents’ quality of life. One of the key goals of Chernivtsi Open Data Hackathon was to gather feedback on existing tools and datasets.

“We are confident the topic is highly relevant. Open data allows us to analyse the city’s operations, improve municipal services, and develop new ones. Together with our partner, the EU Anti-Corruption Initiative, we aim to disclose the potential of open data, enhance transparency and openness, and collect feedbacks from users about the tools and services they need,” emphasized Yevhenii Makhovikov, Deputy Mayor of Chernivtsi.

The teams worked on several key tasks: visualizing statistical information, developing new tools and services, and improving existing instruments used by the Chernivtsi City Council.

Winners of the Open Data Hackathon:

1st place – Digital Memorial
Digitalisation of Memorial Boards featuring QR codes with information about prominent citizens and fallen soldiers.

2nd place – Mindex Analyzes – You Control
An AI-based tool for monitoring and analysing tenders.

3rd place – ProMisto
An AI chatbot for Chernivtsi residents, providing quick answers based on open data from the city council.

Chernivtsi Open Data Hackathon demonstrated how open data can serve as a foundation for modern and useful services for residents. Moving forward, this event will become a tradition for exchanging ideas and developing new solutions and tools for the city.
